How to Choose the Right Cornhole Bag Speed

How to Choose the Right Cornhole Bag Speed

Choosing the right cornhole bag speed can make a major difference in how comfortable and confident you feel on the boards.

Some players want a bag that grabs hard and gives them maximum control. Others prefer something faster that slides easily and attacks the hole. Most players fall somewhere in between.

The goal is not to find the “best” speed.

The goal is to find the speed combination that fits your throw, your shot selection, and the conditions you normally play in.

Start With Your Throwing Style

Before choosing a bag, think about how you naturally throw.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I throw hard or soft?
  • Does my bag land flat or with more angle?
  • Do I prefer blocking and controlling the board?
  • Do I attack the hole aggressively?
  • Do I throw a lot of rolls and cuts?
  • Do I usually play indoors or outdoors?
  • Do I play in humid conditions often?

Those answers will tell you more than simply buying whatever speed is popular.

If You Prefer More Control

Players who like to control the board usually benefit from a slower slow side.

That can make it easier to:

  • Throw blockers
  • Cut around bags
  • Roll over blockers
  • Control where the bag stops
  • Keep bags from sliding too deep

Speed combinations such as 3/8, 4/8, or 4/9 can give you a strong control option while still giving you enough speed on the opposite side to finish shots.

A slower surface can be especially useful on fast boards.

If You Prefer to Attack the Hole

If your game is built around sliding bags directly at the hole, you may prefer a faster combination.

Faster bags can make it easier to:

  • Slide through the middle
  • Push blockers
  • Clean up bags near the hole
  • Reach the hole with a softer throw
  • Play on slower boards

Speed combinations such as 5/8, 5/9, or 6/8 may fit that style better.

The tradeoff is that faster bags generally require more control from the player.

If You Want One Bag That Can Do Everything

A lot of players want versatility more than anything else.

That usually means choosing a bag with enough control to throw blocks and cuts but enough speed to still attack the hole.

Balanced combinations like 5/7 or 5/8 can be excellent all-around options.

These types of bags can work well for newer players, experienced players who want versatility, and anyone who does not want to switch bags constantly depending on the shot.

Beginner Cornhole Bag Speeds

If you are newer to competitive cornhole, avoid choosing a bag simply because it is extremely slow or extremely fast.

A balanced bag is usually easier to learn with.

Something around 5/7 or 5/8 gives you:

  • Enough speed to reach the hole
  • Enough control to learn blockers
  • A forgiving feel
  • Multiple shot options

As your game develops, you may find that you prefer more control or more speed.

Advanced Players May Want More Separation

Experienced players often like a bigger difference between the two sides of the bag.

For example, a 4/9 gives you a very controlled slow side and a very fast opposite side.

That creates more shot options, but it can also require better bag control.

The larger the gap between the two speed ratings, the more different each side may feel.

Consider the Boards You Play On

Cornhole boards do not all play the same.

Some are extremely fast.

Others have more friction.

If you regularly play on fast boards, a slower control side may become more valuable.

If your local boards play slow, you may prefer a faster combination so you do not have to force every bag toward the hole.

This is also why the same bag can feel different from one tournament to another.

Humidity Matters

Humidity can dramatically affect certain cornhole fabrics.

Some bags become noticeably slower when moisture is in the air.

Others handle humidity better.

If you play a lot of outdoor cornhole or live in an area where humidity is common, consider how the bag performs in those conditions instead of choosing based only on its listed speed rating.

A 5-speed bag in dry indoor conditions may not feel like the same 5-speed bag on a humid outdoor night.

Carpet vs Hybrid Bags

Speed is only part of the decision.

The type of fabric matters too.

Carpet Bags

Carpet bags are often chosen by players who want more control and more ability to manipulate the bag.

They can be excellent for:

  • Rolls
  • Cuts
  • Blocks
  • Board control

Hybrid Bags

Hybrid bags usually provide a smoother balance between control and slide.

They are often easier to use across a wider variety of shots and can be a strong option for players who want versatility.

Neither fabric is automatically better.

It depends on what you want the bag to do.

Do You Need More Than One Bag Speed?

Eventually, many competitive players keep multiple bag styles available.

You might carry:

  • A slower set for fast boards
  • A faster set for humid or slow conditions
  • A versatile everyday set

You do not need a huge collection to play well.

But having two or three different performance options can help you adjust when conditions change.

A Simple Way to Choose Your Speed

If you are still unsure, use this as a starting point:

Want maximum control?
Look toward 3–4 slow-side speeds.

Want balanced performance?
Look toward 5/7 or 5/8.

Want aggressive speed?
Look toward 5/9 or 6/8.

Then consider the fabric, bag feel, and how the bag performs in the conditions where you normally play.
